It’s easy to feel like your mind is just as blank.

And then what happens?

I struggled with this
off and on for years…

Some days, I’d be on fire.

Maybe the offer I was writing for was inspiring.

Maybe I could come up with a bunch of email ideas based on the sales page or other copy I was sending traffic to.

Maybe the emails I had to write that day were simple and obvious, such as, “This offer closes TONIGHT!”

But sometimes, the emails just didn’t come as easily.

When it wasn’t so obvious what to say…

And I had to get creative…

My creativity would fail me…

And I’d feel the stress building as I struggled to put words on the page.

And there have been way more times than I’d like to admit…

Where in a rush to get ANYTHING out…

I’d just write whatever I could, pinch my nose, and hit SEND.

It was frustrating…

I usually take pride in my work.

But I’ve definitely written a few emails — in a pinch — that were nothing to be proud about.

My creative ideas to get something on the page were a little too creative

The angle I came up with was too contrived…

Or in an attempt to write anything, I just copied something I’d seen elsewhere and it really never resonated or felt like it would connect with the reader.

And honestly, as someone who has studied email marketers in industry-after-industry…

MOST email copywriting I see isn’t much better!

It doesn’t feel original and unique.

It doesn’t stand out in the inbox.

It doesn’t feel compelling in a way that makes me want to read and respond.

Heck…

Way too many marketing emails don’t even feel like they were written by a human being!

Sure, if there’s a really good offer and that’s made clear, I might click through.

But there’s very few marketing emails — in any industry — that really pull me in as a prospect.

  • The good news is — even bad emails seem to still make a ton of sales!
  • The better news is — you can write emails that are better than bad!
  • The best news is — it’s not that hard to really good marketing emails!

But I’m getting ahead of myself…

I went looking for ways
to write better emails,
more consistently…

And yes, I fell into that trap most of us have fallen into.

I studied others’ email copywriting.

I searched the internet for swipe files.

I even bought a few of those swipe files and templates that promised me writing great emails was as simple as filling in the blanks.

But then I’d try them…

And…

UGH.

They were worse than my “bad day” emails!

Aside from some very boilerplate transactional emails, swipe files don’t work!

Unless you’re selling the exact same product to the exact same market…

AND the people getting your email didn’t see the first one…

You will NEVER have the same success.

(And that assumes the email templates you buy are based on successful emails — which isn’t always true when someone just wants to make money off you.)

YES, there’s plenty you can learn from studying others’ emails.

But copying them ALMOST ALWAYS leads to failure.

Still, I’d have yet another email to write, then another.

I knew I had to
write original emails
that were also based in
effective marketing principles…

But how?

Honestly, I knew what worked.

I knew what got response.

At this point, I’d written quite a few successful marketing emails.

But it was always an act of raw creativity.

I didn’t have a method or approach that worked CONSISTENTLY, ON-DEMAND.

So from day to day I relied on luck and inspiration instead of a proven process.

I knew there had to be
a better way…

So I thought…

Maybe I’m going about this all wrong.

At the time, I’d already figured out that there’s two ways to learn from what others are doing…

You can look at the superficial details, and learn from them.

This is what you’re trying to do when you use a fill-in-the-blanks template.

You’re trying to literally copy the superficial details of their writing.

But the other way to learn from them is to look deeper, under the surface.

Instead of looking at the language and layout and structure of a marketing email, for example…

You can look at what the core idea, or angle, or topic is…

And instead of copying the language and layout and structure…

You can simply ask yourself if their idea, angle, or topic has any parallels for you, that you could use as inspiration to write your own unique email.

I knew I was
onto something…

Just think about it…

The reason it’s so easy to write a deadline email — for example — is because you already have the idea to start with.

You’re not really starting with a blank page.

You’re starting with the idea that there’s a deadline, and if you don’t respond now, you’re not going to get this offer.

You’re starting with a PROMPT.

Of course, there’s all kinds of ways to write about a deadline.

And almost no matter how you actually write your email around this deadline idea…

As long as you feature the deadline…

You will drive a bunch of last-minute sales!

So I wondered…
